  1. During the off season (september 7th-october 14th) i tend to be very sedintary.

this year i really need to keep my strength high, and hit the base phase in good form, and not with 10lbs of extra fat, and a decrease in muscle mass.

I understand that lifting is really worthless, except for to build muscle balance, and also to increase power in the sprint. I do A LOT of hiking and running during the off season, and recently read that running stairs was an excelent way to build climbing muscles. Any one heard anything about this?

hope everyones autum is going well. and spring for our southern brethern.

    vinnie

  2. Running stairs uses a lot of muscles used in cycling, but works a greater number of (nearly) inactive muscles due to the fact that it is still, in essence, running.

It's a good transition/cross training tool (and great anaerobically), but I wouldn't count on it to take you to a new level in cycling.

    That's a pretty short off-season. 🙂

Any type of aerobic leg activity will help maintain some fitness in the off-season, and then at least you're starting from a higher level than being sendentary.
