i'm pround i have tendinitis. it proves i have intensity. i also have
drive and a killer instinct which will eventually translate into
victory. i will venture to say that anyone who does not suffer an over
use injury when they first start running lacks desire and never will
    achieve their full potential.

    interesting theory, moron

excuse me for being a beginner and not being a know-it-all. if any
blame is to be handed out , it is to those who told me that my hiking
experience would allow me to progress faster as a runner. I missed a
very important adventure race because of my injury. i still did a 10 km
orienteering race 2 weeks ago. btw, i have reported your death threat
    to fbi.

oh i'm shaking in my boots. i wonder how long they'll give you for making
false accusations...you got any money i can sue you for or is that all on
    top of the mountain?

no talent is needed for running or walking or breathing. kenyans win

Mistake number one - hiking muscles allow you hike, running muscles
allow you to run - walla tendonitis.

Mistake number two - you licking all you running knowledge from rumors
and hearsay. You get an A for big cajones but a F for some common
sense. Your Sember Fi is titillating hubris at best.

but to do them quickly? I would suggest that talent is required in North
America and Western Europe because base training in youth is no longer
performed by 90% of the population. Sitting in air-conditioned cars to go
anything further than 50 yards is not conducive to high-performance in
endurance events. Except maybe marathon drive-in movie sessions.

Kenyans, like mahgrebans, win because they walk or run everywhere and have
done since childhood. If Kenya becomes as rich as Kansas, they'll end up not
winning any more than anyone else.

what i do when i'm having a bad running day is switch it to
a walk/hike training day. up hills hard. i figure i might
as well get some benefit from my efforts.

That's part of it. But I think that it has more to do with the talent pool.
For example, in the U.S. there may be millions of potential world class
distance runners, but 99% of that potential talent will never be found
because they have other interests (football, basketball, baseball, soccer,
video games). Some of that interest is swayed by peer pressure and/or
money. Things might change if guys like Alan Culpepper were paid multi-
million dollar endorsement contracts. Probably not in my lifetime.

All true, nevertheless, talent is genetic. And groups of people have
    differing distributions of various genes.

I believe the latest research on the Kenyans shows that their slight builds
and especially their thin lower legs confer a slight advantage in
efficiency. It just takes 1% to make a huge difference at the world-class
level. I believe the other metrics, such as lactate threshold and vo2 max
aren't much different from world class runners from other parts of the
world, it's their biomechanics/efficiency that is just a tad better. Some
say this is because they train harder, but I think body type is a key
    difference.

I hike on good days but I do both because I need to do both on race
day. My point was you can't do all hiking and then expect to run and not
have some problems. Biking helps strengthen one's quads but I would not
use the bike as a substitute for down hill training which works your
    quads.

  11. i am anonymous and free to be a jackass.

  12. relax, you coward. you have me feeling sorry for you. anyways, i met an
old girlfriend when i was practicing in this park so i am in a good
mood. i have not seen her for 10 yrs. i think she has lowered her
expectations with age so i have a chance.

  13. there is no way to test whether kenyans have an innate gift for
running. common sense says that it is their desire that gives them the
advantage. teams from poor neighbourhoods always outperform the rich
kids. when your punishment for being a bad runner is starvation, you
will tend to run faster. i don't know why you people are so easly
persuaded to believe these racist theories.

  14. peer pressure is an excellent fuel. join a running club or startt
    running in beginner races.

That is only about 16km to 20km a week!!!!!!!!!!! I do as much just
walking around in my house and to get my paper in the mornings.

Get with it boy and do at least 5 days a week and at least 30km weekly
unless there are natural disasters in your neck of woods.

If you don't agree with someone, throw him into a group (you people), imply
that he's stupid (easily persuaded) , and call him a name (racist).

Let me put my reply in your terms, but without the insults:

I don't know why you believe that any assertion of inheritable differences
between human groups is inherently vile.

The only way this will ever be settled to everyone's satisfaction is to
isolate the gene(s). Since we have a few million genes of greater
importance to discover, especially for diseases, we will discuss this
    for years to come.

Personally I want believe that NE Africans in general are better
runners because they are NOT corrupted by the modern life we have in the
USA and Europe. The fact that they are "naturally" thin, wiry, train
their asses off, don't have TV's and computers in every room, Mickey D's
on every corner and fit the profile that is evident in most elites, is
just coincidental. The racist comment is common idiocy, the caller
needs some serious shrink time. At least raise the vocabulary and yell
    xenophobic. 😉

I'm suing my parents for giving me slow bulky genes. I can then use the
money to get a gene transplant to go with the botox, liposuction and a
trip to the fountain of youth to complete my makeover.

I was being facetious. thinking of other humans as different has been a
    justification for genocide.

Here's an article by Scott Douglas that seems to suggest the idea of
genetic influence. Nothing scientific here, just an observation (and an
    interesting article).

I think there are only about 25k active human genes -- pretty amazing, huh?
I think the wheat plant has more genes than a human being does. So much for
    more is better...

I'm totally open to the possibility that:

    a) it's all circumstance & culture
    b) it's a slight genetic difference between all Africans and the tribes in
    the rift valley.
    c) it's a mixture of both.
    d) it's unknowable.

Based on what I've read, my money is on (c)

I'm going after my Mom. She was a 13 min/mile 5k runner, my dad was ranked
5th in California when he was 62... Both of them have a more slender build
    than I do, damn them.
