  1. Hey I am new to cycling but have been running for years was very competitive. (930 2 mile in high school) However I am starting to develop a real interest in cycling. I was wondering if i could get some advice or a training plan. A plan would be great. i have 2 hours on the weekdays and would be willing to do more on the weekends. Also where could i learn more books? websites?

  2. hi, im also a former runner who converted to cycling

i would recommend joe friel's 'A Cyclist's training bible' (thats what i think its called), it is an excellent book for a novice self coached cyclist.

if your planning to do some criterium racing (laps round a closed circuit) or road racing at some point i think you need to know that cycling is unlike running in that you a cycle race is a lot different to training you can do on your own. Its very difficult to simulate the changes of pace and the speed of bunch racing on your own whereas i know that in running track sessions can be as good for the condition as racing.

the above tip isnt so important if you just want to do time trials (boring) but if you want to race in a bunch racing is definitely the best form of training and i would reccommend you enter some low level races at least once a fortnight, as you become more experienced you can race more often but it is hard and i think once every two weeks would be good enough for a beginner.

so theres my advice, buy the book and understand that cycling racing is different to running racing
