It had been a few weeks since we rode Rocky Point, we want to get as much rides in there before it
closes for the season (for hunting), in October. Jim worked on my bike the night before the ride, to
get it ready. It had self-destructed a few days earlier on a ride in the Greenbelt (see the RR
titled "This Is Impossible" for the story).
I could only pray that my cursed bike would be able to complete the 22 mile loop in one piece...
We got to the trailhead and SingleSpeed Bob was also there. We got to chatting for a few minutes. He
told us he was selling his SS (a beautiful steel Soulcraft) and getting a DH bike. He said that he
tried DHing and was hooked, that he was giving up SS'ing and sticking to his fixed gear track bike
and DHing. Jim and I were both stunned at the revelation. How can somebody sell such a beautiful SS
bike? We just didn't understand...
He took off into the trail and we got in there shortly after. The ride was typical...smooth and
flowing, fast and furiously delightful. The tight and twisty singletrack and the tall moguls kept
you on your toes. One wrong move and you would be flying several feet in the air before you hit the
dirt. The forest of ferns and birch trees was beautifully green and luscious. The weather was
excellent, not too hot, not even humid. We encountered a few other riders on the trail.
We finished the loop in good time. My cursed bike acted nicely, no mechanicals, no problems.
