The weather was almost perfect. Sunny, with temps in the 60's so I scooted out for a ride into Patapsco SP along River Rd. The trails were in GREAT shape and I didn't see anyone else on the trail until I encountered two gentle ladies on horses. As is my usual habit, I dismounted and moved off of the trail so as not to alarm the several thousand pounds of stupid heading my way. The older woman in the lead proceeded to give me a royal ration about having a bike on a "horse only" trail. She said that bikes scare horses which was why this was restricted. I was raised to be respectful of women (at fear of a hand upside my head) so rather than be a Bevis I told her that I had NEVER seen signs restricting Patapsco to horses and that if she saw a sign it was most likely placed by a private land owner near the park but that I would make some calls as soon as I finished to make sure I was "legal".
She thanked me for my courtesy and everyone moved on. I did double check for signage at the trail heads but saw nothing indicating a change in the status of these trails so I suspect that the owner who boards her horses has posted some signs near her property.
Bill W. - You ever had anybody question you on the "out of the way" Patapsco sections?
I managed to get in a 14 mile ride and had a great time.

This is a recurrant situation in Valley Forge Park. You get on a trail, ride for fifteen minutes, come out on a walkway or something and there's the sign: "No Bikes". I think there's just too many ways to get on to a given single track or trail for signs alone to work. -- PeteCresswell

I've always had good luck with horse riders, like you I get off my bike as soon as I smell those horses. Last thing I want is a hoof in the face.
