  1. OK so it was flat for most of the way but I had a head wind for the outward
leg Wetherby - Sherburn in Elmet - Askern and the wind had dropped a bit for
the homeward leg so I didn't get as much assistance as I'd hoped. I stopped
for a proof of passage in Sherburn in Elmet and was engaged in conversation
by one the older locals about the merits of Sam Smith's beer. He'd assumed
that my portly stature was due entirely to beer and he was recommending the
local hostelry with its £1.28 per pint beverages..

There wasn't a lot else of interest on the outwards leg until I got to
Askern where the unmistakable sound of Rolls Royce Merlin engines got louder
and louder and the Lancaster and Spitfire from the Battle of Britain
Memorial Flight flew over the town. I was a tad startled by a chap with
multiple facial piercings and aspirations to acquire the appearance of a
porcupine but I recovered enough to swallow the bolus of food that ceases
moving stomachwards when I first copped sight of him. I was feeling pretty
pleased with my pace as I was managing to hold it above 15 mph on the
    outward leg.

There were a few heavy showers as I headed back. Once again little of
interest until I found myself caught up with some entrants doing a triathlon
at Tadcaster. They must have been the slower tail enders as I could keep up
with the ones on the cycling leg even on the climbs (gentle undulations
really) - I felt a tad smug overtaking one of them who was riding an
expensive bike and I was on my Galaxy. Just before Boston Spa the
triathletes were diverted left by marshals and I realised that I was on for
a five hour ride. I was still feeling fresh-ish as I joined the cycle path
next to the old A1 upped my speed a little and got my final proof of passage
in Wetherby 4 hours and 57 minutes after obtaining my first. I was a few
miles over distance too. A grand day out and an encouraging return to 100km
BPs after a two week break.

I'm ready for the East Riding 200km ride next week now :-)

Nah, despite my surfeit of blubber, I have the buoyancy of a brick :-(
