I had a great time in Vail, Colorado even if it was for work. Now that
I'm back in flat souther New Jersey I still have fond memories at least
for now. Getting used to the altitude in CO certainly has it's short
term advantages. I went on a forty mile road ride on Saturday at a 22
mph pace without changing my breathing or heart rate one iota. Then
Sunday was the biggest surprise of all. The JAR ride was at Mercer
County Park (flat and fast). Even after the 40 miles on the previous
day, I was ready to go. I was a little worried when only the fast group
showed up. We head out on the blue trail towards the playgroung (jumps)
and right away I notice I'm moving fast. So fast that I am right on the
packs wheeels. I'm hitting every logover (there are a lot of them in
this park) and rounding every tight bend. We reach the playground and
they turn around to wait for me. Surprise, I'm already here.
Absolutely amazing! I'm not even breathing hard! We watch a couple of
BMXers do some jumps and we decide that the gaps are just to big for us.
So onto the yellow trail and again I'm moving quick. I even take an
advantage to pass when one of the speed demons screws up a log over.
Look at me, I'm racing! We do all 17 miles worth of trails and end
together. The first time I've ever been able to do that. Maybe I shuld
spend every other week in Colorado or does the altitude effect find a
happy median when you do that?
It was a great day for riding wth low humidity and temps in the 70's. A
really wierd August day, but a confidence builder for me. Twenty Four
Hours of Allamuchy is coming up in two weeks. My first race, ever.
Maybe I can invent a pill that would give the same altitude
effectiveness as going to the Rockies.
