I did this (starting in Toronto) a few years ago, and have a journal

I used Brian Hedney's exellect web pages for the Oshawa-Kingston part
(http://www.hedney.com/bike.htm) and the Lake Ontario Trail map book
(available from MEC and many bike shops.)

Hwy 2 is pretty nice, though it's deteriorated since being
'downloaded' by the province to the counties. I rode along NY 104 (the
big wide interstate-like part) for a way - very broad shoulder so no
problems there.

Presqu'isle Provincial Park was nice except for the lack of drinking
water, as were the NY State parks. It was my first tour, so I moteled
on alternate nights, and freecamped once, near Niagara.

The best place to cross at the eastern end of L. Ontario is through
Wolfe Island. There is a ferry from downtown Kingston, then another to
Cape Vincent NY. I heard on this newsgroup that the second ferry might
cease operation, so verify before you go. You can also cycle on the
sidewalk across the 1000 Island bridge, but they close it sometimes
for maintenance or when Bush gets paranoid. But the bridge authority
will then carry you across in a truck.
