I am training for the Ironman triathlon, and realise that with family responsibilities, etc. I cannot do without a trainer. I have some good hills near my home for some hard workouts, but I really need something to get the long miles in.
Should I get rollers or a mag-type trainer? Also, do you clip-in with rollers ?
Also, the only rollers that aren't too expensive here are the Tacx. Would anyone recommend them?
You need a trainer for sure. Whatever type you get, be sure you use it!!! Save the trainer for short 60-90 minute intense workouts. Save the long rides for the outdoors.
Rollers are ok, but are kind of "old school." They are good for bike handling skills and balance, but that is easy to aquire for most people by just riding outdoors. If you really want to improve your spin, do some isolated leg training (ILT).
Trainers are mandatory, rollers are not. Whatever you do, do not buy a set of rollers that use PVC drums. The end caps will separate rather quickly from the drum.
