Well, it was a lot tougher than I thought. There were hundreds of traffic signals and I had to click out a lot. Parts of the trail were unpaved and it was hard to pedal a road bike across dirt and sand. I wish I used MTB shoes/pedals because we had to dismount several times and hike our bikes up steps to get across bridges. My Speedplay cleats and road shoes were completely shredded at the end of the tour.
Fortunately, I managed to avoid my biggest fears: crashes and flat tires. Plus, the weather was great and the rest stops were always fully stocked with mechanics, fresh fruits, and plenty of liquids. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the 100 mile trail because my eyes went completely blurry after mile 70 and I couldn't weave through the traffic safely.
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience, but I think I'll try some other centuries next year. My main concern is whether I should switch over to MTB cleats/shoes because road shoes are not a good idea on non-closed courses.
