I'm about to replace my old trusty Raleigh Pursuit. My cycling consists mainly of journeys between 30 - 80 miles on road and purely for pleasure (although I do enjoy keeping the pace up). I plan also to do some touring, maybe once or twice a year and am searching for a cycle that best accomodates both disciplines. My initial thoughts are the Trek 520 or Cannondale Touring Light (my budget extends to £1,000 maximum). Anyone got any advice/suggestions. Thanks.

You might consider a 'folding' bike like Bike Friday, Xooter Swift (or Dahon Mu XL, Birdy). While not a full sized road bike it has many practical advantages in terms of easy storage and transportation that might put you on the bike much more often than a formal road bike.
If you like the frame consider upgrading the parts. New hubs that require little servicing. Stainless steel chain. Internally geared hub. Brooks Saddle. I will admit that sometimes the cheapest way to get a certain parts package is buying a new bike.
