The ones at your gym are almost certainly SPD. Ask them.
If so, you may prefer an MTB shoe, although SPD can be used with certain road shoes.

I would start at your LBS, REI, Performance Bikes. Try the shoes on; both REI and Performance have a complete 100% satisfaction policy; don't buy on-line unless you've tried them on first. You'll be amazed how different brands fit.
Shoe type? There are some SPD "sport shoes" which can work quite well on a road bike (with a SPD road pedal). I would suggest deciding on the type of pedal-cleat you want and then getting the shoes to work with them. I would definitely get a shoe with 3 straps or laces. You want the most flexibility when adjusting the fit.
SPD allows you to have the same cleat on both MTB and road bikes. Other types will also allow this (eggbeater type) but personally I don't like their road pedal designs-"the platform" is not as big. You can also get a "road shoe" and put the SPD cleat on them (the shoe has to have more than 3 holes) This is the set-up I have; it's not easy to walk on them though but I do VERY little walking when I'm riding

As far as big shoes go - Diadora and Sidi both have larger sizes. My husband is a 16 and as such has a hard time finding shoes. He found Nike to be way too narrow in the large sizes. He started out with Diadoras (still has 2 pairs) and got a pair of Sidis later on.

The pedals at your gym actually sound like Crank Brothers from your description. Ask them before you buy your own shoes - nice thing about Crank Bro's pedals is that all of the cleats (recessed mt or or regular road) are compatible with all of the pedals.
