Hiya: OK -- I put my seven year old Trek Hybrid with original wheels (but by no means oriignal tires ;P) in the shop because the chain sucks (but no actual chainsuck yet) and the front hub has a little play, but only half the time (hoped they'd find it was just a bad ball) -- and they stop work because a) no seven cog cassettes on hand (which makes me want to go back to friction thumb shifters!) and b) the rear rim's cracked about the spoke nipples. My usual front counter salesperson at the LBS (not one of the wrenches in the back, but technically inclined none the less) did a double-take when I told him they were the original wheels. He goes through a rim every six months or so -- but then he races BMX. Alas, I don't have a mileage count on the poor thing, BUT how long should wheels last in commuting/utility useage, with an occasional bout of riding in the rain next to a beach? With linear pull brakes.

Well I think my front rim on the road bike is up to about 15 years but I only commute on it during non-snow months so with club rides and commuting it probably only does 3-5,000 kms per year. The rear tire is only about 12 years old.
