what V brakes are you using?

XT's HOWL like a rabbid dog. I switched over to xtr and was engulfed in silence.

I might give ceramic rims a go on my next wheelset as an interim step to switching to disks.

Avid Single Digit. I tried Shimano LX too which gave the same result.

If you ride in muddy conditions it's an amazing boost to rim life, and if you ride in rain it will still provide decent stopping power.
Discs do perform better, but is a tad heavier and require more stuff to be replaced. I think it's a perfectly acceptable setup for a lot of XC riding.

I went riding today for the first time in a loong while, and practically wore out a set of XTR brake blocks. The barrel adjuster went from being screwed right in and being really sharp to being screwed right out and soggy in a single ride. This was in the dry as well.

I am sorely tempted to switch over to disks as soon as finances permit. I will almost certainly go for something by Hope, probably the M4.
