Rievaulx walk and directions

Rievaulx isn't far off the direct route from Manchester to
Whitby, so would seem sensible for a stop. Manchester
Airport to Whitby should be about 3 hours if traffic isn't
too busy, however, you'll be leaving the airport around
8:30; when the traffic around Manchester might be very busy;
therefore I suggest taking your time, have a coffee, and aim
to leave nearer 9:30.

Route - M62 to cross the Pennines, M1 north (I guess signs
to York). From their, either A64 to pass York and approach
Rievaulx from south, or A1 towards Thirsk and approach from
west. From Rievaulx, head to Pickering, then across the
moors on the A169. If a steam train enthusiast, also look
out for N.Yorks railway which runs from Pickering, following
similar route to A169.

Driving; I assume you've booked a hire car. If you're
expecting an automatic, I trust you've booked it
specifically, as most UK cars have a manual (stick) gear
shifter and a clutch pedal. The first sections (M62, M1) are
on motorways; these are fast. Just stick to the UK traffic
laws - check mirrors, signal and then move to the left to
allow faster traffic to pass, and you'll be fine.

Hi Steve.

Aim to get to Rievaulx for about 1pm, possible if you fly
into Manchester airport, there are plenty of places to eat
in Helmsley (closest town) or call in at the North Yorkshire
Moors National Park Visitor Centre at Sutton Bank on the
A170 between Thirsk and Helmsley. It would be helpful if you
had an Ordnance Survey Explorer map OL26 (North York Moors)
available at the Visitor Centre. An easy walk starts at
Ashberry Farm grid ref SE570 884 walk through a gate at the
side if the farm house and through the woods to Bow Bridge
SE 569 856 and follow the way marked path towards the Abbey
ruins with great views! After visiting the abbey simply
follow the road to Rievaulx Bridge SE 574 842 over the
ancient bridge and follow the road (quiet) to Ashberry Farm.
The walk is about 2 1/2 miles, taking about 1 3/4 hours plus
time at the Abbey.
