Riding in Tarrytown NY

Although Sharon and I don't live real near Tarrytown, we have ridden through it on our tandem a
couple of times this year -- including last weekend.

Earlier this summer we did a loop that included Manhattan (Central Park and the GWB), the Bronx,
South County Trailway, Tarrytown, Yonkers, Riverdale. We posted a trip report to news:NYC.bicycles,

Last weekend Sharon and I rode a big loop across the the Bear Mountain Bridge and George Washington
Bridge, on both sides of the Hudson River, and we made a pleasant food stop along the way in
Tarrytown. For some possible ideas about how we've ridden that, check the River routes on Bike

One other idea you could think about is to ride the second (west-side) half of the Bear Mt /
Newburgh-Beacon Bridge -- which has some great views -- and I've received two recent reports from
bicyclists being permitted to ride thru the West Point USMA campus. (see River routes map above,
click on "BNB"😉 First you'd have to ride from Tarrytown to the Bear Mt Bridge, not a trivial thing
-- or take the Metro North train from Tarrytown to Garrison or Cold Spring. This ride could finish
at the Beacon train station, then take the Metro North train back to Tarrytown.

Some things to keep in mind: -- Tarrytown has a Metro North train station, and a bike can be brought
aboard some Metro North trains, provide you obtain a bike permit well _in_advance_.

-- The obvious bridge across the Hudson is the Tappan Zee right there at Tarrytown -- but it's not
open for bicycling.

-- It's impossible to do any interesting route of reasonable length from Tarrytown that does not
include riding in some serious high-volume, high-speed motor vehicle traffic, so if you're not ready
to handle that, better find some other place to ride.
