The Grand Illinois Trail has two routes across the state of
Illinois.

There's a bit of cultural stuff in Chicago 😉

The RAGBRAI site has a bunch of routes across Iowa, from past
RAGBRAI rides.

Are you going east to west? If so for next season, while crossing
Missouri, use the Katy trail. It is exactly what you want. Smooth
crushed limestone surface, nice places to eat and stay, winerys
(wineries?) etc. It's also very level.

You're not coming to Michigan?!?!?

If you post an approximate route, you might get better help. E.g. the
I-80 corridor is much different than one going through, say,
Bloomington.
