A: I suggested we ride to Fulton, cross Hwy.12
and ride down the SR creek path. Perhaps we
could then go down Sonoma Ave, left at the Police
Sta. (brookwood?), left on 4th, then left before
we get to the market(at the library,D st?)-back
to Sonoma and back to the trail

B Course: Cross Hwy.12 at Fulton and connect with
the SR Creek bike path and ride it all the way
into downtown SR. We could then loop around City
Hall/past the Police/fire station and back down
4th street (this part would require coordination
with SR police/fire) and then back on to the
trial and back to the corporate center.

Yesterday a drunk driver hit 2 local riders,
killing one, and critically injuring his
girlfriend. The driver was old and actually had
the nerve to try and fake a stroke to get
off..he's a lawyer. Just FYI... This incident has
got a lot of press here, and has rekindled local
anger immensely!! I have already spoken to a
member of our local
paper who may be writing about the R o S soon.

know when the new article comes out. The Dillons
actually know the
girls parents who is still fighting for her life,
and reported to me
that there was a big candlelight vigil last night
for her and the guy
who died that they attended.

On May 10, Columbus City Council will introduce a
Resolution endorsing the Ride of Silence. Do you
have any sample language I can use? We want to
make the City Council Resolution meanigful and
respectful.
I'm sure you know of the Ohio tragedy that
happened May 1. It underscores the need for all
motorists to understand bike safety laws. Bikes
have every right to use our roads and we want to
use the Ride of Silence to publicize the need for
motorists to understand the rights of bikes.
Any weblinks or help you can offer will be deeply
appreciated.

Calvin's Challenge 12-hour race this past
weekend. How devestating 🙁
Notwithstanding...our Ride of Silence is picking
up big steam. I'm close with our city
councilwoman who's a huge cycling/pedestrian
advocate...and she's orchestrating full support
from the city of Columbus. We'll be down to City
Council this coming week to be honored with a

It is between 8 and 9 miles. I've already gotten
two volunteers working on PR with the media.
WHAT: A Silent Bicycle Ride to honor cyclists
killed or injured on the roads and create
awareness during National Bicycle Month. Rides
are being held in cities across the nation and in
Canada*. The attitude of the ride is that of a
funeral procession and we will have a police
escort.
WHEN: 7 PM, Wednesday, May 19th
WHERE: In Tulsa, the ride will be starting and
ending at the West Bank parking lots at 21st and
Jackson. The route will go out 21st St to Peoria,
South on Peoria to 41st, West on 41st to
Riverside Drive, North on Riverside Drive to
Southwest Blvd., South on Southwest Blvd. back to
the start
DETAILS: Cyclists will travel at a speed of 12
mph, 2 abreast. No passing, No talking, Hand
signals only.
No brochures, No registration forms, No releases,
No fees, No shirts, No maps
Word of mouth and emails should promote the ride.
Single sheet fliers are okay (note: a volunteer
is preparing a flyer that I expect to post later
this week for your use in promoting the ride in
Tulsa.)
NO SPONSORS. Endorsements from groups and
individuals who believe in the goals of the ride
are encouraged, but there is no financial
obligation tied to them.
Voluntary donations will be accepted, but only
until there are sufficient funds to pay the
police. After that time no more donations will
be accepted. I will not know exactly how much
the police charge will be until after the Special
Events Application I filled out today is
processed by the City of Tulsa.
The first Ride of Silence was held last year in
Dallas and was organized in 10 days. They had
over 1000 cyclists show up.
This year, in Oklahoma, rides are being held in
Stillwater, Oklahoma City and now Tulsa.
Please help us get the word out so we have a
great turnout at these Oklahoma locations on May
19th.
Our route will be slightly less than 9 miles,
primarily on our Riverside Drive. The start/stop
location is 21st and Jackson. This is also known
as the West Bank Festival.

The CCB will be joining the Ride of Silence as
well. On Wednesday May 19, 2004, the first half
hour of our regular Wednesday night ride will be
ridden in silence, as one huge pack, from BHS to
the Ile Perrot bridge, in Ste Anne de Bellevue.
All participants should wear a black arm band.
If you have ever been injured in a bike-car
accident, please wear a red arm band.
We will ride under police escort at about 20 kph.
Once we reach the Ile Perrot Bridge, we will
resume riding as we usually do. You are welcome
to invite your cycling buddies to participate in
the Ride of Silence.

It was 10 days before last year's Ride Of
Silence, when I began an email blitz hoping just
one person would come out to ride with me around
White Rock Lake in Dallas. A thousand cyclists
attended. No one ever anticipated a nerve being
exposed represented by the outpouring of sadness,
anger, and resentment this ride became. No one,
least of all me, ever anticipated having another
Ride Of Silence.
This year, the ride will take place in 31
locations from Hawaii to Ottawa, Canada. It will
include places such as Missoula, Montana; Santa
Rosa, California, Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Ann
Arbor, Michigan, and Houston, TX. This year this
ride will do what has never happened before.
Cycling history will made on May 19, 2004 at 7
pm, as cyclists from two countries all over the
North American continent will ride at the same
time.
Why?
· To mourn those cyclists already killed by
motorists
· To raise awareness (among motorists, police,
and city officials) of cyclists on the road
· To have motorists know we only want to share
the road
· To show that cyclists are not going away
In mourning, thousands will ride with black
armbands, or red to show they themselves have
been the victim of motorist unawareness,
meanness, or DWI. Cyclists from all across the US
and Canada will show their support for sharing
the road with motorists, as the law prescribes.
Cyclists will take the lead in showing the
carnage taking place on streets all across the
continent, and with results, making it safer for
others who also share the road (runners,
horseman, etc.). I will be among them.
If you come out at a location nearest you (check
web sites: www.rideofsilenc.net, and
www.rideofsilence.org), I will be with you and we
will make history. As Georgette Yaindl, of Hawaii
wrote, "Let the silence roar!" Thank you.

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride (no
registration, no fee, no t-shirt) that asks its
cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain
silent during the ride. This will be a public
ride; a ride showing support and public
countenance. This is NOT a race, NOT to be
thought of as a race, and NOT to be treated as a
race. This ride will be non-partisan, not
sponsored, non-promotional and not for a charity.

"May 19 (1838) is the birthday of Colonel Albert
A. Pope, the "father of the American Bicycle
Industry," whose Pope/Columbia Manufacturing
Company was employing 10% workforce and producing
a bike a minute at the turn of the last century
in Hartford, CT. Col. Pope is also considered the
Founder of the Great Movement for Better American
Roads, which called for pavement, and guess who
the advocate constituency was? Yes, cyclists.
Colonel Pope also set up a bail fund for
bicyclists who were arrested in acts of civil
disobedience challenging stupid laws, like only
one bike at a time may pass!
It is also the birthday of Malcom X, He would
have been 79 years old. "By any means

For those coming to the DALLAS Ride Of Silence
location at White Rock Lake, expect a large
crowd. Get there early if possible. Wheels roll
at 7 PM.
If you are driving, please consider parking at
other than T.P. Hill, as parking is extremely
limited. Consider parking and riding to the start
at the T.P. (Start is the same place as last
year, next to the stone bathrooms.)
