Yes, As far as I remember there is a fairly good and well marked track, so
you won't need particularly heavy boots. The track starts somewhere near
Embonas. We had a hired car, so I don't know if you could do it by public
transport. Take LOTS of water though.

I would seriously consider if to do Mt Ativiros at this time of year you
would be exposed to the sun and without shade nearly all the way and you
would need to carry a LOT of water. But there are other hills you could walk
especially if you are going to hire a 4x4 or even a motorbike to get around
on, both types of hire was very cheep when we where there a few years ago
and we used dirt tracks to get up and into the hills.

Walking anywhere on Rhodes in August strikes me as plain foolhardy..
[Actually, GOING to Rhodes in August is on the brink].

Seriously, it is likely to be killingly hot. I have been roasted on
Rhodes in November. And I am a Grecophile and will be in Pelion at the
same time as you. [I think we're a bit foolhardy even going there].

Also, Greek mountains can often be rather impassable and it is not easy
to get good maps. That situation has improved in the last three years
with a new series of both island and mountain maps [Road Editions].
However, I have not seen any of their Island series and don't know
whether these are of a quality to walk from. Previous island maps,
produced mainly for tourists, were quite inadequate for walking.
Mapping was also hampered by the Greek fear of Turkey which led to
deliberate downgrading. This might not totally be alleviated in
somewhere like Rhodes, so close to the border.

But while you're on Rhodes DO include the compulsory visit to the Grand
Master's Palace in Rhodes Town. Well worth the visit. It also gives
somewhere to go that's slightly cooler. Incidentally, the guide book by
Elias Kollias "The Knights of Rhodes" is particularly informative and
the English edition is remarkably well translated.
