I've got an old steel (Raleigh / Reynolds) MTB in basically OK form but I need to replace the shifters and rear mech (I've already replaced the chainset and knackered bottom bracket).
The current cassette is a 7-speed SunTour jobbie with friction [censored].
What are my options for replacing the derailler with a reasonably modern part? Would an 8-speed Acera (with matching indexed shifters) do the job? Or would I need to replace the cassette?

Cheers,
It might work with you cassette, are you sure its a cassette ? Best to change it though and a new chain.

Good call, it is indeed a freewheel. I think I'm going to replace the (bent) rear wheel and get a 7-speed Shimano freewheel from eBay.

if you are getting a new wheel, if you can find one cheap enough I'd recommend a cassette hub. You will have more choice of cassettes for the future
