Reviving an old MTB

It might work with you cassette, are you sure its a cassette ? Best to
change it though and a new chain.

Good call, it is indeed a freewheel. I think I'm going to replace the
(bent) rear wheel and get a 7-speed Shimano freewheel from eBay.

if you are getting a new wheel, if you can find one cheap enough I'd
recommend a cassette hub. You will have more choice of cassettes for the
future
