After a several year hiatus - I've jumped into the marathon pool again.
When I last left, long run training was aided by drinking water, sport
drink, and swallowing Goo! What's the hot "portable" aid now days?

Urine, preferably your own. You just aim and pee. Great on the run
once you perfect your aim.
I think the only new thing the past several years was not to overdo the
water drinking. Approximately half of the rare deaths in recent marathons
have been attributed to water poisoning- hyponatremia. Its been theorized
that the availability of water stations in formal races may make some people
over drink.
More people still have the opposite problem of dehydration. If you lose
more than a couple pounds in a long run and have coloured urine, you arent
drinking enough water. Dehydration and ibruprofen can damage kidneys.

I don't buy it's an over abundance of water stations problem. In cases
of hyponatremia it's drinking to much water the day before and ONLY
drinking water in those abundant aid stations that leads to problems.
Hydrate before and during with fluids that have carbs AND salt even if
it's Gatorbarf. I won't say it's impossible to drink too much too
frequent but that's atypical. You could have aid stations every five
miles and drink a gallon at each. What we have here is a lack of
hydration education regardless of the frequency of aid.
I frankly like lots of frequent stations especially if means I can
hydrate little and frequently and not have to carry a jug or camelback.

I agree here!
