It appears the Giro is counting the Prologue as
Stage 1 and that my stage numbering has been off
as a result. I will take advantage of the rest
day to correct that.
May 10th in the Giro:
Learco Guerra is the third most prolific Giro
stage winner, and one of those is the stage he
took on this date in 1931 in Mantova. It was a
fine win, but the Giro where he really stacked
up the stages was in 1934 where he took 10, yes
10, of 17. Guerra won the Giro that year, winning
as an opportunist in that brief time between
Binda and Bartali.
Alfredo Binda took 6 of 17 stages in the 1933 Giro,
a dominating performance for the aging star. And
it could have been more except Giuseppe Olmo pipped
him into second on this date in the sprint in Firenze.
This Giro would mark Binda's last Giro win while
that stage would be Olmo's first of many.
Olmo would go on to take 20 Giro stages, He remains
one ahead of Alessandro Petacchi, who began his
Giro history on this date in 2003 when he took
his first stage ahead of none other than Mario
Cipollini. Included in Olmo's total is the 1936
Giro where he won 10 of 21 stages yet still
finished second to Bartali.
Petacchi is still composing his Giro history. But
in 2003 Cipo was still formidable and would take
two stages that year at age 36, one of the oldest
stage winners the Giro has known.
