Hello, Please forgive me for the ignorance which will pervade this post, but alas, it is what it is. I am in the market for a new mountain bike, having tired of replacing axles/rims on my lousy $200 Motiv. I am looking for a steel frame hardtail. I am only 6'1'' 175lbs, but have a penchant for rough riding (in the parlance of our times.) I am willing to pay more for something that will endure my abuse, but something in the range of $900. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Any reason why you particularly want steel? I'm not going to disagree with your choice, but a decent steel frame may well mean that you'll get lesser components at a given price point, plus, you're going to severely limit your options. Steel bikes are very much in the minority these days.

Don't get hung up on brand names as the am-b ministers of misinformation would like you to do. Go ride as many bikes as you can in your price range and get the one that fits the best.

To the OP: I've ridden a Stuff all to [censored], then my friend Crooks rode it for a season in Colorado (not particularly maintaining it well) and it came out with flying colors.
