Hi, I just got a nice road bike from this garage sale that I plan to refurbish. 700 x 25c =D. However, there seems to be a problem with the quick release. The spring coil is failing and its sort of twirling off. Only a slight part of the coil is being clamped by the quick release while a lot of it is hanging off. This is had led to sudden dis-alignment (sp?) of my rear wheel. So as I am starting to accelerate from a certain green light, i find that my brake pads are impeding the rear wheel's movement. Upon inspection the quick release from one of the sides has failed and caused the wheel to misalign itself. So I tried to loosen and retighten the quick release over and over again. It lasts for about 150km until it happens again.
My question is, how much would it cost to replace quick release for my wheels? How much would a shop normally charge for it? If I do it myself, is it hard? Do I need some special grease for the new skewers? Will chain lube do (I have raceday white lightening lube and a synthetic lube that turns dry-ish)? Is it as simple as twisting the quick release nob out and then sliding it out and sliding the new one in?

A LBS may have a box full of ond ones. Any grease or lub will work.You got the basic dril.Changing skewers is a basic no brainer.I'm not sure what the spring coil thingy is you reference, but the springs on either side of the QR have to be installed in the right orientation or they slip over the axel and screw things up. They don't have to be there,but are simply a connvenience.

Small end of the spring toward the axel ends. Nothing will fall off. Make sure the wheel is correctly positioned in dropouts before retightening.
