Hello everyone. This is my first post here so go easy on me. A few years ago my father in law gave me his old bike. It may or may not be an 18 speed Miyata. Im sure it's an 18 speed, Im just not sure if it's a Miyata. He told me that it is actually a custom made bike that he put Miyata decals on because at the time he was a rep for miyata and had some decals just laying around. The tubes also aren't welded together and are made of Reynolds 531 tubing which he said Miyata didn't use. He also said something about hand files spurrs and since I don't know much at all about bikes I have no idea what that means. I don't know wether or not to believe him about all of this because of the story of how he got it and how the president of Miyata was mystified by the bike when he saw it. Basically this guy likes to tell stories and you are never really sure which ones are real and which ones aren't. He's a good guy and I don't think he's being mean or anything, he just likes to tell stories. Can anyone tell me by what I've said if this is a Miyata or a custom build? So anyway on to my other question. The cable to the front derailleur is bound or rusted or something and I need to have it replaced. Since I know nothing about bikes, I don't want to try and do it myself because while I can follow the instructions that I have read on some sites, I just know I would mess it up. That and the cable runs through the tubing and I don't even want to mess with that. So about how much do any of you experts think it would cost to have a cable like that replaced? Do you think it would be extra because it goes through the body of the bike, or do people see things like this a lot? And just for my own curiosity, how would you run cable through a bike like this? Would you have to do it while its still apart? Or is there some genius way of doing it? I am also the kind of person who is amazed when the cable guy can install a new cable outlet on an interior wall of a house, so maybe I'm just missing something.
