  1. I've been doing assisted dips (trying to get to "rel" dips) but they
give me a sore elbow. I wanted to have this in my routine because it's
    a compound exercise.

QUESTION - Can anyone suggest an exercise that will provide close to
    the same benefits?

    Thanks

Bench press. Most closely, decline bench press. If you are still
doing assisted dips and are not accustomed to bench press, a spotter
    is very important.

Congratulations, you just graduated to full dip ([censored]) status.

Bench press. Incline bench press if your shoulders grumble at you with
flat benches (roughly the same stimulation for the clavicular head of
the pec major, but unlike dips not equivalent for stimulation to the
    sternal head).

For just an 'upper body pressing movement' you could also use any of the
variety of overhead presses, but the movement is in the opposite
direction to the dip, so you won't be getting the stimulation for the
sternal head of the pecs. Just thought I'd throw this tidbit in there,
most likely because I'm exhausted and can't sleep...a rather irritating
    combination.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Dips have a chest component overhead presses don't have, but overhead
    presses like this one:

are generally much kinder to your elbows and shoulders because they let
you find your own groove through the movement. I prefer this exercise
done standing and one arm at a time because you get excellent core work
from it that way - and I use a kettlebell instead of a dumbbell, e.g.,

The Arnold Press _is_ a compound exercise as well, it's just a different
    one.
