I have an old Bridgestone MB2. Haven't been ridding it on trails since college (over 10 years). Back then there was not much talk about xc vs downhill vs free ride or any other ride. It was just get out and ride on a trail whereever you could find one. At ski resorts, we rode up to ride down. No one thought of taking the lifts. Now that I read about different MTB types I get a bit confused about the different types of riding and bikes. Anyone willing to give a reorientation?

I too have been out of the sport for around ten years, just getting back into it now that my daughter has cast aside her stabilisers! I've found http://mountainbike.about.com/ to be pretty useful as it contains loads of info, some pretty basic but some good stuff too. Like you, when I was into MTB back in the day, there was one type of biking - mountain biking! I guess that is now called cross-country (or XC). As I remember downhilling was taking off around that time too - that's still called downhilling. What is new is "freeriding", which I believe is what urban riding is called (i.e. you don't get muddy). I've seen guys pulling BMX-style jumps and tricks but on MTBs, and I guess this is what freeriding is (someone who knows more will surely correct me if I'm wrong..)
