  1. if i close my eyes, either during meditation or just laying
down, i get what i can only describe as rapid eye movement
that(assumption) normally occurs only during sleep. is that
what it is? after awhile i drift off into surreal state, but
it is not something that truly resembles a sleeping dream.
the REM is practically instantaneous - just sitting back in
my chair with eyes-closed brings it about.

    i get plenty of rest.

is there an explanation for this?

No. What you're probably feeling are simply your eyelids
twitching. They'll stop when you sufficiently relax
    them. Try it.

Look up the terms "hypnogogic" and "hypnopompic".

    Does that answer it?

it may not have been obvious from my post, but i have to
actually "let my muscles go" for it to happen. it does not
occur in an upright position(such as the posture assumed
while typing this), i must lean back in my chair and become
totally relaxed. it definitely is not eyelid-twitching; i
woulda noticed by now, this not being a recent development.

after 20-30 minutes of not moving my body ends up semi-
paralysed.. then comes the surreal state previously
mentioned. obviously, being for the most part awake, i am
still aware of sensory stimuli and most of the surrealness
involves whatever is around me. for some reason or another,
i get the impression i am underwater.

bright light prevents the eye-movement, if that is relevant.
