Would they be significantly more than $AU660 (= $US500 price on Sheldon's site).
I want a bike for riding around work (large flattish area) and a fixed gear would be interesting and low maintenance. Mudguards are not such a bad thing (riding in work clothes).
I realise most track bikes have pretty tight wheel clearances but are there any that have enough room for mudguards and a front brake mounting hole, preferably in steel?

I wouldn't just currency convert and expect the same price, but call the shop and see what they'd do one for.

There plenty of shops selling fixed/single 700c/26 bikes. Shifterbikes/malvern bicycles plus do quite a few brands that answer this description.

I've been looking into one of these. However it seems that now is a bad time for buying one - next years version is due in Sept, and there doesn't seem to be much stock of this years version left.

I've seen mudguards made out of perspex offcuts, mounted in sections, chainstay to seat stay and seat stay to rack and beyond, using P clamps. In some places you can buy mudguard stay clamps (hole through bolt).
Part of the trick was evenly heating the perspex to curve to shape.
No reason why you could not "roll" a stip of gal or plate. Hang it up and lightly spray from a can for colour.
Not relevant to your application, but flat strip mudguards are very useful for back roads riding where you run into a strip of reall claggy mud that just build up and stops everything. you can poke it out easier.
