I'm not sure why you don't want the warm up data and a little bit after the race. All I do is zero the torque, and do a clear all then do my warmup and don't worry about it after that. You can just select the portion of the ride that is the race and annotate that separately. If you download all your rides, you will want to do that. -
its not that i dont want to record the warmup etc. its just that i do not know how to record anything. do i have to put the powertap into record mode so that it'll record or can i just use it like i normally do and ill be able to download. thanks for the help, im new to powertap and ill take all the advice i can get. all i want is to be able to record a early season training race and look at the data. thanks

Sorry, my bad.
If you have a modern PowerTap (not one of the original ones that says Tune on the side) they all record data. Even if you don't use intervals it records until it gets filled. You don't want it to fill because sometimes this can lead to lost data. I never use intervals, and I try to download every ride that gets recorded. Just remember to rezero the torque and do a clear all at the start of every ride.
