  1. I lasted posted about 3 weeks ago, just after starting my 12km (ew)
commute. Thanks to those who suggested that I should be able to increase
my speed, as I have! ๐Ÿ™‚ PB is now just sub 24min, but normally takes
    25/26min.

I've been readed about SPD pedal/cleats and thinking about getting a set
of Shimano PD M-520, but now looking for a decent shoe to commute/longer
    rides in.

I don't want I MTB fabric style shoes, just something that is good value
for money. - Any suggestions, brands to avoid etc?

    cheers

I have a pair of the "Crane Bros." shoes from Aldi which are very cheap
and I thought quite nasty, but actually they are very comfortable, have
a good firm sole and so far have lasted well without any problem.

SIDI. Twice as expensive as anything else, but sufficiently more
comfortable to justify that several times over.

Seriously, Shimano shoes used to be lasted for /very/ narrow feet.
Specialized shoes seem to be lasted for fairly narrow feet. Do not
buy /any/ cycling shoes without trying them on.

I'm pleased with the Shimano MO21 shoes I got to go with my M520 pedals
for relatively short distances. (I use Looks on road bike). Not amongst
the narrowest shoes I've ever bought, and I didn't try them before buying,
knowing that I could return for a refund.

However, more expensive models will be stiffer*, cooler** and adjustable
on the move via velcro straps.

    * Not so good for walking.
** Not so good in the winter!
