  1. New rider here, so I hope this question is not too general to offend....

I'll be in Beverly, WV (near Elkins) for Labor Day and was thinking of
bringing the new bike along. I've done a bit of searching already, but I
was hoping y'all had some ideas for beginner to intermediate (I may be new,
but I can walk my bike as well as anyone !) trails in the Elkins vicinity.
Looking more for a fairly mellow single track XC trail (I expect fire roads
or doubletrack would be expected in parts of such a trail ?), not the gonzo
DH rides available at Snoeshoe. I know the trail on Spruce Knob down past
Judy Springs to the creek is a must do, but it sounds way beyond my current
skill level (or could I walk the nasty bits there too ?)

I would think anything in the Davis/Elkins area, Canaan Valley, Dolly Sods,
Blackwater Falls, Seneca, Spruce Knob would be accessible for a day trip
    from Beverly, no ?

FWIW, I'm a long time road biker so I am actually in biking shape, just
lacking more than beginner MTB skill.

    Thanks in advance.

I'd go to the Slatyfork area. Lots of trails, easy and hard. Lots of open
meadows, fireroads, doubletrack, and rocky/rooty singletrack. Swing by the
Elk River Touring Center for a map of the area and trail suggestions.
http://www.ertc.com/ They host a race called the Wild100 every year which
is just an awesome well run race.

Lots of people associate downhill with Snowshoe, but it actually has an
incredible amount of XC singletrack too.

Since you'll be near Davis, you might also consider swinging by Blackwater
Bikes in Davis. Helpful folks there will have trail suggestions.
