Recommendations for car bike carrier

Never got a reply on this, but in case anyone else is in the market, I
got a Bell 109460 2 bike carrier which looks up to the task for $29.99
at the Fortress of Evil (Walmart). Goes for about $10 more everywhere
else I've seen it.

I probably could have/should have chimed in on this, but I think you
did well.

My wife had some Allen (not Alien, but Allen) 2-bike trunk-mount
carrier that she picked up . . . somewhere . . . probably for $3 . . .
just to get her hybrid across country once. I took to using it for a
while out of necessity. It offered *no* provision for cradling the
bike(s); therefore, when the wind hit on the freeway, the bikes would
slide precipitously backward, toward the "retaining" lip. Fear
Factor: the Aluminum Edition.

Eventually, I began tightly lashing the top tubes of the bikes to the
uprights on the rack. That worked well enough, but we finally put a
receiver on her car and bought a high-end Thule hitch-mounted 4-bike
carrier. Much, much more secure. We're getting a receiver for my
car, too. Then we can use the rack on either car.

I think yours is fine because it offers a solution to the problems we
had.

Now . . . don't give any more money to WM. We're *all* subsidizing
them because of the wage they (don't) pay.... ;-)

If that's the one Dan got, I got the same model a few years back, also
at said Fortress (before deciding they'd get no more cash from me).
I've had it on a 1990 Sable and a 2001 Focus, with one or two bikes, up
to 75mph, and never had the least little worry about losing a bike. One
little caveat - if you've got a spoiler or other body-effect on your
trunk, this type of carrier could be a problem.

Don't know about anyone else's, but mine came with no instructions, and
its versatility makes it a little less intuitive to use, so pay
attention to the pictures on the box. :P

Yup that's mine. Only difference is the straps that secure the bike are
Velcro, glad to know it works well, I thought it would. I have 2 cars,
the older Sentra I mentioned without a spoiler which will likely be the
primary transport vehicle, and one which does have a spoiler, but it's
an absurdly high, swingset-like monstrosity UNDER which I actually think
the carrier would fit. In deference to the paint on this newer car
however I'll likely go with the spoiler-less model ;-)
