  1. brief history:

I spent a couple of years doing cardio and weight lifting in the mid 90's. Got married, got busy
with work and kids and laid off the weights for a few years. I started lifting again in 2003. I
tried HST for a while, tried 3x10, pyramid, just all kinds of stuff trying to find a workout I
liked. Since January I've been lifting heavy weight / low rep, 5 or 6 days a week, and added squat
and deadlift to my routine in February. I really like that system and got stronger in the first few
months, but my gains just sort of stalled. I kept with it though.

Four weeks ago I had 1 rep maxxes of: squat 355, dl 335 and bench 335. At that point I decided that
I was spending too much time in the gym so I cut back to 4 days a week and stopped going heavy,
doing 12-15 rep range instead. Well my curiosity (and obsession) got the better of me and I
attempted new maxxes this week. Results: squat 2x405, dl 1x405, and bench 1x365. Where the hell did
it come from? I haven't trained heavy in those lifts, or any other, in 4 weeks. Could I possibly
have been over training, even though I consider myself a relative newbie? I'm happy as hell with it,
just curious how it happened, and how can I keep it going?

Over training? Could be, not enough info to tell (if you were doing a heavy
full body routine 5-6 days/wk then yes).

Your recent gains are probably more likely due to "shocking" your body. Any
time you reach a plateau switching things up can be very beneficial. If you
want a more definitive "over training" answer you'll need to supply more
    info.

ok. Generally I'd do something like this: squat, bis, tris x 2/week, dl & shoulders x 2/week, and
bench & back x 2/week. For all exercises, 5 or 6 sets, 3-6 reps, 70%-95% of my 1r max. Most, but not
all weeks, I'd take a day off. I also noted that I never had any soreness until I started letting up
a bit last month. I've always chalked up the lack of soreness to the fact that I was religious about
spending 10-15 minutes in the whirlpool after each workout. Now I think that might have been
    [censored].
