Rear derailleur/shifting problem

  1. I'm very new to cycling and taking care of a road bike. I noticed that when I try to shift to the next biggest cog the chain doesnt go anywhere, it just stays on the first cog. I then have to shift once again just go to on the second cog. That continues until i can't fully get onto my last cog. The chain gets halfway onto the last cog but jumps back down. Thanks in advance.

    (Is there a guide on how to maintain your road bike around here>😉

    Zinn writes a good maintenance book,and www.parktool.com has the how to on derailer adjustment and other good stuff in the repair section.
