I was running last friday when I suddenly got a really bad cramp just below my right ribs at the front of my abdomen. When I got the cramp I ran about 3/4 mile at a 8:30 - 9:00 pace. I walked for another 3/4 mile and the pain still wouldn't go away so I turned around and walked back home (1.5 mi) hurting all the way.
I found this really odd because since I started running a several months ago, I can run about 3.5-4 miles at that pace before I start to feel pain or have to stop. Even then it doesn't hurt in the front below ribs. Usually it's near my obliques that hurts, but only mildly; not enough to disturb me. I cannot remember doing anything different during that run compared to what I normally do. I am breathing so that one complete cycle (inhale + exhale) takes 4 to 5 steps. I spend about 5 to 10 minutes stretching and warming up (includes pushups, jumping jacks, and pull-ups) before I start running.
Is it normal to ocasssinally have some really bad cramps. I ran a 5 mi course today and I didn't get the cramps again.

Likely a side stitch. Read the thread titled "Pain below the ribcage". Ignore Bill and his poor excuse of a clone of me.
