  1. I am looking to start using the bikes at my gym, and I'm getting ready to leave for college, and I want to have a grasp on what to do so I don't look dumb in front of people. I wanted to start cycling this summer but I have been too busy.
My question is...How long and at what speeds should I start out at? mph please
I'm in pretty good shape, I'm doing this to try and lose weight and to also tone up my legs. Any help would be appreciated, I came here because of Ric!

  2. When you get to the gym ask an instructor about using the equipment. Then settle at a pace which comfortable for you. average mph could be anywhere between 10-15mph for about 20 mins to start. Nothing too busy. Then build on time, level of difficulty (hill mode) and speed, later on. When you start cycling, do the same. It's easy and fun. Everybody has to start somewhere and you ask every cyclist if they've ever fallen off their bikes whilst learning to ride or ever. They will all say yes, of course. So don't worry. Enjoy biking, it's the best.

    Thank you!🙂

  4. Agree -- start wherever *you* are. Is the gym near laundry by any chance? 'cause I'd find an excuse to go in there with a book or something, or pretend to watch tv (there's usually one there)... you know, you're just waiting for somebody... and you can observe :-)
Then get on there like you're the expert with your personally tailored exercise plan. I don't know about 20 minutes -- I know my first tiem on one of those things I was sweating profusely after 5 or 6... but I was probably going too hard :-) If that happens, look at your watch and go for some inane and arbitrary number of seconds more, pause for a full minute (though any arbitrary number will do, it is the visual effect that counts 🙂) and go again atg a gentler pace.
Don't let the know it alls rule the world. Dare to be a newbie :-)
