Good for you!

IMHO, and experience, work on an average speed of _only_ 6mph. Say, 5 hours
cycling at most, that equates to about 30 miles. My Scouts completed an
(on-road) challenge camp, cycling to our County site some sixteen miles
away, in about three hours. They were carrying all their kit, and the time
included route finding and map reading (albeit somewhat poorly!). We
"rescued" the team heading in the wrong direction along the A40 :-)

fitness of young people these days,
The popular press would have you believe that it's poor, and we're raising a
generation of couch potatoes. However, the calibre of child that joins the
Scouts for the adventure it offers is probably somewhat better. You might
like to try some circuit training (e.g. press-ups, sit-ups, Burpee squats,
etc) in your Troop Night Programmes before the event, to assess their
fitness levels.
Please excuse me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but IMHO a bigger problem
than fitness will be the mechanical state of the Scouts' bicycles.
