I think you're talking about the freehub body, the part that the
cassette fits on that has the one-way ratchet? I've bought complete LX
hubs for parts, stripped them for cones, balls axles and freehubs. I've
transplanted LX MTB freehub to Ultegra road hub w/o problems.
If they've changed the XT hub design, maybe a LX has the old design, or
maybe you can find an XT hub (complete) of your vintage & use just the
freehub body. Having a shop lace in a new hub (probably with new spokes)
on a 2 year old rim seem like a waste.
