Shimano freehubs are generally compatible. In some combinations, the spacer
that sits between the freehub body and the hub body may have to be shimmed
out a bit to prevent the two from rubbing. I have not found a combination
that does not work with a some effort, except for pre 9-speed Dura-Ace not
working with everything else.

BTW: If the hub spins rough, then the bearings and hub cones may need
replacing. Do not let the shop talk you into a new hub if only the cones
and balls are shot.

If the hub cups are shot, then you really do need a new hub. This is
extremely unlikely with the better Shimano hubs, unless you've been running
the hub under a salt water bath for several years. If you do need a new
hub, do not let the shop convince you that you need new spokes unless you've
mangled your old ones by dropping the chain into them. This topic has been
beaten to death in this group.

Many shops will refuse to build a wheel using old spokes. They don't
know what's been done to them (even if the rider does) and don't want
the hassle of being blamed for broken spokes later. Even Jobst
acknowledges this in his book, although if you're doing your own
wheelbuilding you might as well reuse the spokes [1].

[1] but if the original wheelbuilder didn't lubricate the threads and
the spokes are really old, it's often less hassle to buy new ones than
to clean the crud off old threads to a point where truing is easy.
