Pay attention to exactly how these statements are made. Most likely what was REALLY said is, for example, that your dosage of radiation in a year is less than what you would get walking back and forth from your car every day. This statement could well be true because the total amount of radiation from x-rays occurs during a very short period of time (perhaps one second) and what is really important is the accumulated total over a much longer period.
I have worked with nucleonic sources most of my life. I don't worry about occasional x-rays, but I would be concerned about more than one or two sets in a year.
