Which leads me to the next question - if you're only running a 5k, how do
you start off feeling great? I hate having 1/3 of the race feeling like
[censored]. Is there some warmup exercise to do?

Sorry, in my precipitation I missed this bit.

When I run a 10k I warm up (ie jog slow) for 30 mins => much longer than
    the race.

    For a 10k I do the same. For a 21k I'll do 20 mins or so.

I'll jog 10-15 minutes prior to a marathon, to take it one step further.

For a 5k I'd do much the same thing as for a 10k but with some more drills
    and lines - ie 30 mins = 20 jog + 5 drills + 5 lines (YMMV).

At my age, I'm so slow that it seems pretentious to do sprints, but I do 2
or 3 20 second pickups just for old times' sake.
