Heck, I'm happier riding my bike anywhere than being stuck in traffic
inside of a nice car WITH A/C. People think I nuts riding in the
Arizona summer heat, then I explain to them...
1) The amount of heat you "absorb" is a function of the difference in
temperature between the ambient air and your body.
2) Even on a really hot Arizona day, the difference is only 10-15
degrees F (5-7 C) for a cyclist.
3) On that same really hot day, the inside of the car is going to be
MUCH hotter - at LEAST 50-70 degrees F (28-39 C) hotter than the
driver's body temperature.
4) The driver is going to "absorb" a lot more heat while the A/C is
trying valiently to bring down the interior heat in the car. Keep in
mind that everything in the interior of the car is "heat soaked" and
even when the air temperature in the car reaches human levels, the
seats, doors, windshield and everything else is still doing their best
to toast the driver's body. Some people drive with oven mitts as a
result (I'm not kidding).
5) Meanwhile, the cyclist is tooling along effectively sitting in
front of a 15-20 mph full-body fan. Assuming the rider's sweat glands
work, the evaporative cooling will keep the cyclist reasonably
comfortable - never approaching the thermal shock of the driver
entering a virtual automotive sauna.
Then I add that I NEVER get stuck in traffic, and that I don't have to
go to the gym to stay in shape.
