I would say that if you can at least jog the entire thing, no matter what
the speed, that is a good effort. My wife once on a lark did a 1/2 m once
in 2:10, and she jogged every step. I think this was a great effort
considering she ran only 3-4 miles/week.
Faster runners aren't necessarily tougher or "better". They usually have
more talent, run more miles, and aren't working harder or hurting much more
than many middle of the packers, in my experience. My first 3:21 marathon
hurt much more than a 2:37 I ran a couple of years later when I was fully
prepared.
