  1. In a word, no. Only corn fits the description you give. Wild wheat, rye,
    and barley all thrive in the wild to this very day and are very similar to
    the domesticated varieties. What did occur in the latter case is that the
    part that attaches the grain hull to the shaft was selected de facto to
    have greater shatter resistence. In the wild varieties grain breaks,
    shatters, from the stem at the smallest touch or movement; which promotes
    spreading for the next year's seed. When man started using these dense
    wild stands of grain those he tended to gather were those whose tendance
    to shatter was lower. Like all domestication this selection passed on to
    the seed planted next year. Latest examples show use of these wild stands
    of grain 35000 years ago in the middle east. Only in the case of corn
    were the set of de facto selections such that it can no longer grow, or
    with great dificulity, without the grain being removed from the cob and
    planted. The example of "wild rice" in n. american is an example of wild
    grain today being used, in fact there were several examples of seed
    domestication in n. america in the eastern woodlands. If your knowledge
    in this area is similar to that of Neanderthals, your "diet" has a big
    problem, but the whole "paleo" diet thing has serious flaws and that is
    another story.

  4. Any domesticated grain currently in use as an agricultural product in
    the western world (wild rice is not a domesticated grain, yet) has had
    major changes inflicted on its genetics. Either thru generations of
    selective breeding or with in-lab genetic manipulation. They may look
    somewhat like their original versions, but they are signicantly
    different. At the very least, the grains will be much larger than in
    their original forms. Higher yields have always been the primary goal
    of agriculture. Higher yields have lead to higher consumption which
    has lead to the current dietary and epidemiological disaster.
