I was surprised that I gained a pound or two of weight after the marathon. I did not overeat, at least not by much, so I am curious what could have caused that gain.

My guess is that it's water retention coming along with the glycogen stores being re-filled.

I'm running about 45-50 miles per week but only weekdays. At the weekend I put on about 5 pounds when I'm not running, even though I'm not overeating or eating badly. Supposedly, the water attraction of glycogen accounts for 4-5 pounds of weight.

As others have said - water retention. I've gained several pounds after a long run of 20 miles. Once I'm done with the run I am drinking throughout the day. The body goes into survival mode and over compensates by storing extra water in case your brain decides to do something stupid again like run 20 miles. ;-)
