    Statement 1: "Falls and fractures could be a thing of the past if
    everyone aged 65 and older were to take extra vitamin D, experts
    believe."

    Statement 2: "Dr Heike Bischoff-Ferrari ... estimates that taking
    daily vitamin D supplements would reduce an elderly person's risk of
    falling by at least a fifth."

    Statement 3: "Dr Frazer Anderson ... estimated that daily calcium
    (1g) and vitamin D (20 micrograms), either alone or in combination,
    would mean one fewer person each year per 100 would sustain a
    fracture."

    Slight difference, eh wot?

    The truth is that the interaction of calcium, fluorine and Vitamin D
    on osteoporosis alone is a scientific mare's nest, and the North
    American dairy industry sure isn't helping us to understand it.
    Increasing Vitamin D as you get older probably does help - I aim for
    400 IU/day myself now - but there is a lot of dispute about the two
    minerals and how Vitamin D interacts with them.

    synthesis of vitamin D3. The bare minimum proven to
    benefit osteoporosis is 800 IUs (20 mcg) as I recall.
    Fluorine increases bone density but decreases bone quality.
    The factors I'd look at would be such things as vitamin K
    (at least 450 mcg per day), vitamin D3 (at least 1000 IU),
    boron, DHEA, testosterone, calcium, magnesium, and
    exercise.

    Also it woulb important to avoid high vitamin A (retinol) intake. This
    means that cod liver oil is not a good winter time vitamin D source as
    it contains too much of retinol.
