Re: Victory over knee injury!

Well, it had been 6 months since my last muni ride (the Downieville
Downhill), and a little over 5 months since my knee surgery (ACL
reconstruction), and I was able to hit the trails again last week. I
did a short ride on Tuesday to see how I felt. That went well, and
Sunday I did a couple of hours with KrashinKenny. It was Kenny’s
birthday, and my victory over injury day. The ride was great and I was
very happy to find I could do most of what I could do 6 months ago. My
surgery knee feels as good as the other knee, and the carbon fiber knee
brace I wear for a little extra protection doesn’t hinder my riding at
all.
My doctor is very happy with my recovery and how I have built my quads
and hamstrings back which is what protects the knee from injury. He
said at this point my new ACL is as strong as the original, and because
of my muscle tone I am no more susceptible to reinjury than I was before
the injury. I am still playing it safe, but I do not have the fear that
I thought I might.
Thanks to everyone who has offered sympathy and information, and
continued checking on my progress.

It feels great to be back!

Don't get me wrong. I am not almost normal, but I wasn't before the
injury either. It wasn't brain surgery.:)

Every injury is different and I was lucky to have fared this well. You
are young and will be back to normal even if it seems to be taking too
long. My post may have been a little too positive, but I really want to
give encouragement to people who have similar injuries. I do have some
knee pain now and then, but it isn't bad enough to keep me from doing
things, and the more I do the better it feels once I get over the
initial soreness.

And Max, I didn't do any one foot wheel walking or wheelchair downhill
racing while I was injured, but I'm sure I would have if I was your age.

Eric, I hope to ride with you guys soon.

Actually, I am pretty much back to normal (physically) now. Just, it's
been 11 months. 5 of which I couldnt put any weight on my bad foot.
Indeed I would consider you lucky to be back so quick. Even though, Im
sure it doesnt feel quick to you.

This is great. Just in time for the riding season again (in the heat of
the Texas summer). How about a cheer!

Thanks everybody.
Yes John I am thrilled that I was out during the harsh 50 -75 degree
winter weather and now can start riding in the more tolerable 90-105
degree range.

And yes Jagur and Nathan I plan to be at California Muni Weekend and I
hope everyone else is also. It was great last year and I am thinking it
will be even better with two functioning knees.

Tom H, you are my hero! You actually took a picture of me RIDING. You
must have been hiding because anytime I saw a camera I bailed, as John
Foss's photos prove. Seeing that really makes me want to go back to
Downieville. Maybe as a warmup the day before Tahoe? Okay, maybe
not.

Same here, TB.

I don't remember that either, but there was just too much to take in.
Maybe Tom Photoshopped the whole thing to make me feel good.

Yeah, see that drop in the foreground? I'd just nearly had a
cliffside-retreival-of-my-remains experience after going down that and
hitting a rock the wrong way. I was taking a bit of a breather.

(Well, it wasn't a cliff, but it would have been nasty anyway).

The stump on the left is in the foreground of the photo; Scott is still
a ways up the trail. (See the sunlight on the ground in front of him--it's
behind the stump). Probably the tree trunk on the right side of the photo
used to be attached to the stump on the left.

Oh, and I forgot to mention where it was. The shot is on Downieville,
one or two switchbacks above where we stopped at the bridge.

You might be onto something Frank. Even after being off the Muni for
six months, he still kicked my butt and I couldn't keep up with him on
our Muni ride last Sunday ;)
