    5,000 feet isn't a bad elevation gained, although it appears that the vast
    majority is gained on one brutal "hill". Last year, I rode a century ride
    in Westchester county, and this ride had about 8,000 feet of elevation
    gained. But there were no true mountains; you gained and lost the same
    600 feet.
