Here's my take on this. I think it's impolite for people who are not
regulars on the rec.bicycles.* hierarchy to post, out of the blue, "I'm
doing a big ride for such-and-such a charity -- it's a great cause --
sponsor me!" Just because a cause is worthy and you're supporting it through
participating in a bicycle-related fund-raising event doesn't mean that
anyone should give you money.
However, I think that when you raise money for a cause you care about, you
should ask people who are your friends to donate. I think you have friends
here, so I don't think it's such a terrible thing. Traditionally, little
one-line advertisements have been acceptable in .sig files, so a simple,
"sponsor me for the 2007 Utah MS 150" with a link wouldn't be out of line.
You could use the same .sig for all the newsgroups you post in, because
there might be folks in soc.religion.mormon or whatever who'd want to
sponsor you too.
I had such a link in my .sig before doing the Leukemia Society's Big Climb
for my friend Dena (who sadly passed away shortly after the event). I got a
few sponsors from this newsgroup who had friends and family who had
leukemia, and I greatly appreciate their support.
